The Boy, who is slowly becoming a man, is sad. Sadder than I’ve seen him in a very long time, maybe ever! I whimper at him because his sadness makes me sad. I lick the salty water off his cheeks, then rest my head on his lap, looking up at him and wagging my tail, hoping that will make the sad go away, but it only seems to make it worse. He starts making all sorts of howling noises, his body hiccupping, the wetness coming faster now. He wraps his arms around my neck, burying his face in my fur. I don’t like it when The Boy is sad.

“I enjoyed each and every story but my favourite was The Last Ride by Justin Ames. It was excellently told and I look forward to more work by this author.”

There were two that stunned me as much as filled me with aw: EC Rohm’s Secondhand Doll and J.M. Ames’ The Last Ride. Both were written perfectly for the journey taken at heart.

“Ames’s “The Last Ride,” I could not get through without a box of tissues.”

“Conversations with the Serpent” by Andrea Barrios and “The Last Ride” by J.M. Ames are my two favorite stories in the anthology. Both stories are incredibly well written and moved me to tears.

Some of my favorites:Get Your kicks On Route 66 by David Williams
Ants of Uranus! by Randy Blazak
Jurassic Station by Carl D. Jenkins
The Last Ride by “That heart-wrenching bastard” J.M. Ames
The Whalers Dues by Brian Paone”

Secondhand Dolls and The Last Ride were heartfelt and yet gut wrenching at the same time.

  • I wrote the initial draft in about 90 minutes.
  • This is the only story I’ve written which moved me to tears as I wrote it.
