“The Boy, who is slowly becoming a man, is sad. Sadder than I’ve seen him in a very long time, maybe ever! I whimper at him because his sadness makes me sad. I lick the salty water off his cheeks, then rest my head on his lap, looking up at him and wagging my tail, hoping that will make the sad go away, but it only seems to make it worse. He starts making all sorts of howling noises, his body hiccupping, the wetness coming faster now. He wraps his arms around my neck, burying his face in my fur. I don’t like it when The Boy is sad.
I don’t remember too much about my life before The Boy, just some foggy images of my mother. I never met my father, never had any littermates, at least not until I met The Boy. I don’t exactly remember how I got to The Boy’s den, I just remember The Boy’s father holding me in his outstretched paw to The Boy. I was so small then, I fit in one paw! The Boy was small too, a pup just like me, only a man-pup.
When the man-pup got a little older, he crawled around on all four paws like me. We chased each other all around the yard. I would bow to him and yip, and he would laugh. I would lick his face and he would squeal and giggle. We were so happy then.
A few years later the man-pup grew into The Boy, and he began walking on his hind legs, like his mother and father and older littermate did. I got bigger too — bigger than The Boy even! But he still played with me all the time. He would climb on my back, and I would give him rides around the yard. He would throw the ball for me, which I LOVED. Sometimes we would just rassle in the yard. Sometimes I would run in a circle around him, stopping just to bow to him and bark to get him to chase me. He always did.”
